Seafood lovers are in for a treat in Copenhagen. Being surrounded by the sea and having a long tradition of fishing in Denmark, we are naturally spoiled with our seafood. At pretty much all the Copenhagen restaurants (or at least the ones that we recommend) you are able to order delicious seafood dishes from the a la carte menu. But if you are looking for specific seafood restaurants so that you are completely spoiled for choice on the fish and shellfish front, then below I have created a list of my favourite seafood restaurants in Copenhagen.
I am not an expert in Kosherfood, but I do know that many of our Jewish running tour guests always request recommendation for our fish restaurants, so I am guessing the list below is safe to recommend for Jewish tourists in Copenhagen.
Fiskebaren – One of the the hippest seafood restaurants in Copenhagen
Fiskebaren is one of the very best (if not the very best) seafood restaurants in Copenhagen. Michelin has placed on its bib gourmand list and whenever I recommend it to guests, it is always a success.
The menu offers anything that a seafood person could wish for. You want oysters. They have four different types. You would like cold and raw seafood, they have a handful of smaller dishes that fit the bill for this, and then there is of course the warmer and larger dishes. For the meat lovers who can be slightly overwhelmed by all the seafood or if you have a guest in your party that is not so keen on seafood, there are also a few meat options. That said, they seafood is indeed so delicious so unless you are somehow allergic then I would strongly recommend you to opt for the fish at this place.
Their wine menu has an extraordinary good selection of wines and they have a large selection of natural wines.
Fiskebaren is located in Kødbyen which is the Copenhagen Meatpacking district and the restaurant still has the feel of an industrial building with tiles on the walls and a pretty raw feel. This however means that the acoustics can sometimes be overwhelming. So if you go I would recommend to book a table and ask if it is possible to sit in a corner. Fiskebaren is open 7 days a week and is therefore also great if you are looking for a good restaurant that is open on a Sunday or Monday, where all the restaurants in Copenhagen seem to be closed. This one is not.
Krog’s Fiskerestaurant – the traditional seafood restaurant in Copenhagen
No list of seafood restaurants in Copenhagen without Krog’s Fish restaurant. It is the oldest and most traditional fish restaurant in Copenhagen and a popular choice with especially the older Danes. I am together with my sister bringing our 92-year-old Granma to this restaurant next month, and when she suggested the restaurant, it was an instant success. So if you want a traditional seafood restaurant in Copenhagen, this is the one.
Krog’s Fish Restaurant I would especially recommend for lunch as they serve the traditional Danish Smørrebrød with a great selection of herring (pickled, salted, fried – you name it!). They also do hot dishes with a great selection of seafood from shrimps to the traditional fried plaice.
The wine selection is rather exclusive and if you want to kick off your evening with a 1970 Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon Oenotheque at the price of DKK 24,500 you can. There are also plenty of options to kick off your evening with some cheaper options.
The restaurant is located right in the city centre at Gammel Strand, which is also where the fishermen’s wives were selling fish in the old days. You can see the statue of a fisherman’s wife along the quayside.
Krog’s Fiskerestaurant is closed on Sundays.
Fishmarket
Fishmarket is one of the unique seafood restaurants in Copenhagen that is French inspired and serves the more traditional seafood dishes such as seafood platters, Bouillabaisse etc. It is a cosy little bistro that is open for both lunch and dinner.
Fishmarket is located right next to d’Angelterre – undeniable the most exclusive hotel in Copenhagen – so the clientele can sometimes seem a bit elitist, but trust me that Fishmarket is easy going and very welcoming.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day, so there is no excuse not to indulge in yummy seafood at Fishmarket.
Musling – the bistro seafood restaurant in Copenhagen
Restaurant Musling has the same owners as Fiskebaren and the style and quality of the dishes are very similar in terms of high quality dishes and good and fresh ingredients. The service is friendly and the restaurant itself is cosy yet modern.
Musling has a varied menu and lots of smaller dishes, so welcome to the most delicious pick and mix in Copenhagen. They have three different types of oysters, lots of small and large fish dishes and very importantly also a good selection of 100% vegetarian dishes. For the meat lovers they also have one meat dish on the menu.
The wine selection is extensive and they have a great selection of natural wine. Even if you do not like seafood or you are not hungry, it is worth visiting Musling simply to drink their wine.
Musling is located just by Torvehallerne and Nørreport station so it really cannot be a more central seafood restaurant in Copenhagen. It is open for both lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.
Relæ
OK so Relæ is not a specific fish restaurant, but they make awesome fish dishes so it deserves a place on this list. I have written about Relæ in my article about gourmet restaurants in Copenhagen. Relæ is a Michelin restaurant that is certified organic, located in the hip area of Nørrebro and awarded the ”most sustainable restaurant” in the world.
Food here is lots of vegetable, good fish and more taste and textures that you could dream of. Only one word left to write: Enjoy!
Additional recommendations for seafood restaurants in Copenhagen
Restaurant Hummer – located in Nyhavn and the only restaurant except for Kiin Kiin by the Sea that we dare to recommend in Nyhavn, that is otherwise known as a bit of a tourist trap.
Sticks n sushi –It is a chain of restaurants but still the best sushi in town.
They do take-away as well, if you just want to stay in your hotel room.
